Maritime department in Shanghai, east China has taken a series of measures to facilitate the shipment of production materials as many companies have gradually resumed work while containing the novel coronavirus outbreak.

At a port operated by China's steel producing giant Baosteel Group in Shanghai, all the cargo ships have to enter the berths as instructed by the maritime authorities and the crew aboard are not allowed to come ashore, as part of the measures to contain the spread of epidemic.

Meanwhile, the maritime department has streamlined the work procedure by replacing the original paper documents with electronic ones and adopting remote supervision so as to reduce human-to-human contact.

"We have dispatched people to work 24 hours a day. When there are many ships, we will give priority to those shipping production materials and arrange patrol boat to escort them," said Ma Mouxioing, team leader of a law enforcement unit in charge of patrolling at sea under the Baoshan Marine Bureau.

Thanks to those effective measures, the port has witnessed increasing throughput in recent days.

On Tuesday afternoon, 4,000 tons of cold-roll steel sheets were loaded on two cargo ships and shipped to the virus-hit Wuhan in Central China's Hubei Province to support local auto makers to resume production.

On the same day, of the 15 berths at the port, 14 were occupied by cargo ships that were busy with loading and unloading operations. Those ships would deliver the steels to different places across China and even to the overseas market.
